Embracing a concept of theory that extends beyond the purely textual, Diacritics features, in every issue, the work of a visual artist on the cover and on several full-page (or double-page) color illustrations throughout the issue, accompanied by a text commenting on the artist’s life and/or work. Recently featured artists have included creators as diverse and renowned as Ai Weiwei, Clemens Gritl, Judith Eisler, Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, Jean-Xavier Renaud, and Lee Ufan, to only name a few.
Artists who are interested in showcasing their oeuvre in a future issue of Diacritics are invited to submit their work to us. We are encouraging submissions of art across a wide range of media (painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, installations, public art, and stills of video art). We are specifically interested in artists who engage with theory or theoretical concepts in their work in some way, though “theory” should be understood here in a broad and inclusive sense. We encourage both more established artists and young artists at the beginning of their career to submit, and actively welcome submissions from artists who are Indigenous, of color, queer, or disabled.
To submit your work for consideration, please submit the following to Hannah Miller at diacritics@cornell.edu
- A selection of about 7-10 images (that can be, but do not have to be part of a series)
- A text that you propose would accompany those images (this can be simply a brief biography, but preferably an artist statement written by you, or a text about your work written by someone else of up to about 4 pages in length)
- A brief biography or link to your work/website, if not already provided under #2
We will generally be able to respond to your submission within 4 weeks. Please keep in mind that we only publish 4 issues per year, so we may not be able to immediately feature your work in the next upcoming issue. We should, however, be able to let you know in advance what issue your work would appear in.
